WINTER SPORTS RANKINGS

There are no changes among the top eight teams, but La Verne Damien moves up a spot and Los Angeles Loyola appears in the rankings for the first time. Brea Olinda’s 2-1 loss at Villa Park on Friday was the Wildcats’ first of the season, but it was enough to drop them out of the top 10. Loyola has won 11 consecutive games since a 2-0 consolation loss to No. 5 Long Beach Wilson in the Huntington Beach Marina tournament. That streak began with a 2-0 victory at No. 6 Santa Ana Mater Dei on Jan. 4.

Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley retains the No. 1 spot because it sits atop the best league in the Southland, but the Cougars are coming off consecutive scoreless ties with Mission Viejo and San Clemente in South Coast play. Just when it seemed No. 3 Santa Margarita might be headed toward the top spot, the Eagles suffered an inexplicable 2-1 loss to Torrance Bishop Montgomery (3-10-4) in the Serra League. Huntington Beach Edison rises to No. 4 and Dana Point Dana Hills plummets from the rankings having won just once in its last eight outings. Arcadia has been on the top-10 bubble all season and makes its debut this week.

Santa Ana Foothill, Newport Harbor, Corona del Mar and Santa Margarita reached the final four of a tournament for the third time this season, and Foothill made it a clean sweep over Newport Harbor with a 6-1 victory Saturday in the Southern California Invitational final. The two teams play Wednesday at Tustin High to determine the Sea View League title. Villa Park is proving that Corona del Mar won’t have as easy a time in the Southern Section Division II playoffs as many believe by finishing seventh Saturday. Upland won the La Verne Bonita/Whittier tournament Saturday with an 8-3 victory over Montebello and plays at Baseline League-rival Etiwanda on Thursday.

Anaheim Esperanza replaces Sunset League rival Los Alamitos in the rankings this week after winning the league dual-meet title last week and the league tournament Saturday with nine wrestlers advancing to finals. The Southern Section dual-meet championships this weekend offer some intrigue. In Division I, Santa Ana Calvary Chapel and Santa Ana could meet in a rematch of Calvary Chapel’s 36-28 victory on Jan. 28, with host Temecula Valley and Orange El Modena in the mix. Rosemead and North Torrance, the top Division II teams, should meet in that final.
