Bozeman Won’t Play Against Cal

Bruin point guard Cedric Bozeman’s strained right shoulder will keep him on the sideline tonight.

Bozeman has started 17 games, including the last six. He injured the shoulder Jan. 30 against Oregon and aggravated it twice -- against USC on Feb. 5 and against Arizona State on Saturday.

Coach Steve Lavin didn’t announce a replacement, but sophomore Ryan Walcott is the only other Bruin point guard. Walcott is averaging 23 minutes a game, nearly as much playing time as Bozeman.

Another option is to move Dijon Thompson or Jason Kapono to the position. Both are more comfortable at small forward or shooting guard, but Kapono played point guard early last season when Bozeman was out with an injury and Thompson played there in high school.

No. 18 California and No. 21 Stanford, the teams visiting Pauley Pavilion this week, are having sensational seasons. Neither was ranked in the preseason, yet they are a combined 37-10 overall and are on Arizona’s heels in the Pacific 10 Conference race.

Lavin said both Ben Braun of Cal and Mike Montgomery of Stanford are deserving of coach-of-the-year consideration.

“They are throwback basketball teams,” Lavin said. “They don’t dazzle you with spectacular individuals or spectacular plays. But in a deliberate, methodical way, they manage to wear teams out.

“Both teams are out of the 1970s, fundamental, well-knit, cohesive. The players embrace their roles and sacrifice themselves for the benefit of the team.”
