Giguere Has Look of a Money Player

Mighty Duck goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere sat around for four days with the memory of Friday’s 6-2 loss to the New York Rangers.

Giguere gave up four goals in the third period that night and watched Martin Gerber play the next two games. He was anxious to get back in.

“I kind of owed the guys one,” Giguere said.

He did what he does best Wednesday, stopping 31 shots in a 2-1 victory over Florida. Giguere was particular effective during the first period, when the Panthers had 15 shots.

“It was important to me to be strong for 60 minutes,” Giguere said. “When you have a game like that [New York game] there are two ways to look at it. You want to get back at it right away. But there are a lot of games left and it was good to get Martin in there.”

Giguere had a good look on how the Ducks’ first goal was scored Wednesday. Samuel Pahlsson, standing near the Duck net, spotted Paul Kariya alone at center ice and sent a pass to him. Kariya scored on a breakaway.

One thing still puzzled Giguere when he was asked about the play afterward. He looked across the dressing room at Pahlsson and hollered, “Sammy, did you see Paul on that play?”

Pahlsson nodded and Giguere said, “Well, then that was some play.”

The Ducks were scoreless on three power plays Wednesday and have only three goals in their last 40 power plays.

Steve Rucchin nearly ended that streak when he chipped a backhand shot at what seemed like an open net in the first period. Panther goalie Roberto Luongo managed to reach to his left and bat the puck away with his glove.
