Man Dies When Hit by Suspected Drunk Driver

A man who had gotten out of his car after slamming into a center divider on the Costa Mesa Freeway was hit and killed by a suspected drunk driver, authorities said Tuesday.
Leonard Kaplan, 72, of Newport Beach died shortly after 11 p.m. Monday when he was hit by a Jeep Wrangler traveling 65 mph in the southbound carpool lane near 17th Street in Tustin.
The driver of the jeep, Shanna Kelley, 23, of Mission Viejo, was being held on suspicion of drunk driving, California Highway Patrol Officer Denise Medina said.
