Singh Finishes Fast (63) and Wins

Vijay Singh birdied five of the first six holes and shot an eight-under-par 63 Sunday at Scottsdale, Ariz., to win the Phoenix Open for the second time.

Singh finished at 23-under 261, three strokes ahead of John Huston. Singh also won the tournament in 1995.

This was the 12th victory on the PGA Tour for Singh, a native of Fiji who lives in Florida. The 2000 Masters champion also has 21 international victories.

It was the fifth consecutive victory on the tour by an international player. Luke Donald of England and Singh started the string on the same weekend last season at the Southern Farm Bureau Classic and the Tour Championship. Ernie Els of South Africa won the first two events in Hawaii this year.

Singh won $720,000, boosting him from eighth to second on the money list with $990,929.

Huston bogeyed the 17th hole and closed with a 67. Third-round leader Harrison Frazar finished with a 69 and tied for third at 265 with Robert Gamez (66), Retief Goosen (67) and Tim Petrovic (68).

Alex Cejka and Joe Durant finished five shots off the lead, followed by Phil Mickelson and Mike Weir at 267.

Els lost the lead with a bogey on the last hole and Zhang Lian-Wei made a three-foot birdie putt at No. 18 to win the Singapore Masters.

Els had three bogeys on the back nine in a round of one-over 73 and finished at nine-under 279. Zhang shot a two-under 70 for a 10-under 278.

Karrie Webb defeated Annika Sorenstam and won the LPGA Skins Game at Wailea, Hawaii, taking 12 skins worth a record $470,000. Sorenstam finished second with $70,000, Laura Diaz third with $60,000 and defending champion Laura Davies was shut out.

Webb won the final 10 skins in recording her first victory in three Skins Game appearances. She broke Davies’ record of $340,000 set in 1996.
