Millions of beachgoers, ornery jellyfish and riptides meant a lot more work for Los Angeles County lifeguards Friday at the beginning of the Fourth of July weekend, authorities said.

Zuma Beach lifeguards alone rescued about 100 people, compared with 60 for a typical week, authorities said.

And in the roughly 30-mile stretch of coastline from Cabrillo Beach to Marina del Rey, lifeguards rescued about 150 people Friday, said L.A. County Fire Capt. Mike Cunningham.

About 650,000 people swarmed those beaches on Friday, he said.
