Das Finishes Third in Boys’ Tennis

Jeffrey Das of Fullerton finished third in the boys’ 18 singles division of the U.S. Tennis Assn. Super National Clay Court Championships with a 0-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Ned Samuelson of Belmont, Mass., on Sunday in Louisville, Ky.

Das, a graduate of Fullerton Troy who will play at the University of San Diego, was seeded fourth. He lost to eventual tournament champion Nestor Briceno of Pembroke Pines, Fla., in the semifinals.

Chip Hand of Placentia teamed with Ashwat Sarohia of Altadena to win the boys’ 18 doubles championship over Kaes Van’t Hof of Newport Beach and Chong Wang of Houston.

Joe Fargis of Southampton, N.Y., defeated defending champion Chris Kappler of Pittstown, N.J., and two other riders in a jump-off Sunday to win the $150,000 Cargill Grand Prix of the United States in the finale of the four-day equestrian event in San Juan Capistrano.

Fargis rode Edgar to a third fault-free round in the jump-off to earn $52,500. Gabriella Salick of Thousand Oaks finished second aboard Sandstone Laurin with one fault to earn $35,000. Kappler finished third aboard Royal Kaliber and Debbie Stephens of Glenmoore, Pa., was fourth aboard Cosequins CEO.

Josh Shipp scored 31 points to lead Fairfax to a 76-71 victory over Westchester in the championship game of the Fairfax boys’ basketball tournament Sunday.

Three Southland teams will open play at noon Wednesday in the Snickers U.S. Youth national soccer championships in Germantown, Md.

The Southern California United in under-16 boys, the Irvine Strikers in under-15 boys and the Newport Beach Slammers in under-14 girls won Far West regional championships to qualify for three days of pool play.

The top two teams in each age division will meet Sunday for the national championship.
