Trials for Governor’s Cup Derby Tonight

Twenty-one 3-year-old California-breds will run in three 400-yard trials tonight with the 10 fastest qualifiers advancing to the Governor’s Cup Derby in two weeks.

Sum Special Strawfly is the likely favorite in the second trial. The gelding has won two in a row, including the El Primero Del Ano Derby in his last start. Ramon Sanchez will ride. His opponents include Magic And Rhythm, a winner of her last two, and former La Primera Del Ano Derby winner Ipomea.

In the first trial, Cee A Dash, who has won three in a row for trainer Paul Jones, will take on A Tempting Chick and Female Friend, among others. Dealadash tops the field in the final trial.

The picks: 1. Richillini. 2. A Cashin. 3. Virnima. 4. Secret Samuri. 5. Hope I Fly. 6. Jazzing Glory. 7. Cee A Dash. 8. Sum Special Strawfly. 9. Dealadash. 10. Thru Grace.

Four! Single Richillini in the first, use A Cashin, the Flyin First Class-With Regrets and First To Be Late in the second, single the Virnima-Du East in the third and all in the fourth.

Shots in the dark: Dashnemoto stretches out to 870 yards for the first time for trainer Felix Gonzalez in the fifth. Victory Peal drops into a claimer for the first time for Jones in the sixth.
