Racing Is Fair in Stockton

Share

The first of the county fair meets gets underway today, a 10-day run at Stockton.

Entries were plentiful even though the fair will be going opposite Bay Meadows until that track ends its meet Sunday. Today’s 10 races drew 103 entrants. There are seven races for thoroughbreds, two for Arabians and a mule race.

At Hollywood Park, Victor Espinoza and Patrick Valenzuela, 1-2 in the jockey standings, have five mounts each on today’s card as the track heads into the final six weeks of its spring-summer season.

Espinoza, who has been on 43 winners, will ride Genie Magic in the second, Miss Expensive in the third, Cleartalker in the fourth, Vowel Play in the sixth and Lago Maggiore in the seventh. A win by any of his horses would be an upset.

Valenzuela, who has 39 victories, will be aboard Thatswhatshesaid in the second, Good Day Sir in the third, first-time starter Legendary Traitors in the fourth, Royal Place in the fifth and Leprechaun Kid in the seventh.

His best opportunity might be with Leprechaun Kid.

Race of the day: Blue Boat, a winner in his U.S. debut for trainer Bobby Frankel on May 18, will try the main track for the first time in today’s eighth at Belmont Park.

One for the road: Dynamometer, who missed by a neck after breaking from the outside post in his debut on the Gulfstream Park turf course on Feb. 14, should get the job done against a weak field in today’s ninth at Belmont Park. Edgar Prado will ride the son of Dynaformer for trainer H. James Bond.

Exotically speaking: A pick three singling Blennerhassett in the second, using Dream Day and Stormy Spirit in the third and Spellbinder, Cleartalker, Legendary Traitors, Rush Into Heaven and Ruler’s Court in the fourth.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 2/93. Money: Previous day/meet total: $9.80/$512. Total money bet: $604.
