Dye Delivers for Athletics in 12th

Jermaine Dye homered in the 12th inning Tuesday night to lead the Oakland Athletics over the visiting Atlanta Braves, 4-3, in the first game between the teams since the 1914 World Series.

Dye, in a season-long slump that left him with a .160 average coming in, connected off Jung Keun Bong (5-1) to improve Oakland’s record in extra-inning games to 4-2. He also had an RBI single.

Chad Bradford (5-3) pitched two scoreless innings, helping stop Atlanta’s five-game winning streak.

When the teams last played, they were the Boston Braves and the Philadelphia Athletics, and the Braves won the World Series in a sweep.

Robert Fick had tied the game in the ninth inning with his sixth homer, a solo shot off Keith Foulke, who blew a save for the third time in 18 chances.

Toronto 13, Pittsburgh 8 -- Carlos Delgado hit his AL-leading 20th home run, and Orlando Hudson and Josh Phelps connected for consecutive homers to lead the Blue Jays at Toronto.

Delgado, who leads the majors with 70 runs batted in, reached 20 home runs for the eighth time -- surpassing Joe Carter’s club record of seven. He became the fastest Toronto player to reach 70 RBIs, doing it in 64 games.

Delgado leads all players with 34 career interleague homers and 99 RBIs.

Texas 9, New York Mets 7 -- Rafael Palmeiro hit his 504th homer, Michael Young and Hank Blalock each hit two-run shots at Arlington, Texas, and the Rangers avoided their first 10-game losing streak since 1995.

Palmeiro connected leading off the seventh inning against Pedro Feliciano to make it 9-4, tying Eddie Murray for 18th on the career list.

Met shortstop Jose Reyes went two for four and scored twice in his major league debut. He turns 20 today, but became the first teenager to play for New York since pitcher Dwight Gooden in 1984.

New York Yankees 5, Houston 3 -- Mike Mussina ended his four-game losing streak and Hideki Matsui had three hits for the Yankees in a victory at New York. The Astros saw the end of their seven-game winning streak.

Mussina (8-4) had struggled since winning his first seven starts of the season. He matched the longest losing skid of his career over a span of five starts.

St. Louis 9, Boston 7 -- Scott Rolen’s double broke a ninth-inning tie and the Cardinals defeated the Red Sox at Boston in their first meeting since St. Louis beat Boston in the seventh game of the 1967 World Series at Fenway Park.

Steve Kline (3-4) got the win and Cal Eldred struck out two in the ninth for his eighth save.

Chicago White Sox 5, San Francisco 3 -- Miguel Olivo and D’Angelo Jimenez hit consecutive homers in the seventh inning as the White Sox overcame a long Barry Bonds home run to beat the Giants at Chicago.

Jon Garland (4-5) struck out a season-high seven for the White Sox in the first game that counted between the teams since Chicago beat the New York Giants, 4-2, in the 1917 World Series -- the last Series title for the White Sox.

Cincinnati 4, Tampa Bay 2 -- Austin Kearns, Aaron Boone and Jose Guillen hit solo homers for the Reds at St. Petersburg, Fla., and the Devil Rays suffered their fifth consecutive loss. Guillen, who played parts of three seasons with the Devil Rays before being released in 2001, also made a perfect throw to the plate in the seventh to prevent Aubrey Huff from scoring the tying run.

Chicago Cubs 4, Baltimore 0 -- Sammy Sosa doubled and scored the Cubs’ first run, and Shawn Estes pitched seven innings of six-hit ball in a victory at Baltimore. Baltimore’s Melvin Mora extended his career-best hitting streak to 21 games.

Montreal 7, Seattle 3 -- Javier Vazquez pitched six solid innings and Endy Chavez homered and drove in a career-high four runs at Seattle to lead the Expos to their fifth consecutive victory.

Colorado 5, Minnesota 0 -- Preston Wilson, Charles Johnson and Greg Vaughn each hit first-pitch home runs in support of pitcher Jason Jennings to lead the Rockies at Minneapolis.

Kansas City 7, Arizona 3 -- Carlos Beltran had three hits and three RBIs, and Desi Relaford drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the seventh inning to lead the Royals at Kansas City, Mo.

Cleveland 8, San Diego 5 -- Rookie Brandon Phillips, who was in a one-for-35 slump, hit a two-run single to highlight a six-run first inning for the Indians in a victory at Cleveland.
