Two people were killed and three injured early Saturday when a car that had stalled on the San Diego Freeway was struck by a pickup and burst into flames, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The accident occurred about 3 a.m. when a 1997 Nissan containing three people stopped near the Getty Center because of mechanical problems. Police say the driver of a Chevrolet truck was intoxicated and speeding when he crashed into the car.

The driver and one passenger in the Nissan died as flames engulfed the car, officials said. One passenger escaped and was taken to UCLA Medical Center with head and neck injuries, police said.
