Willa On The Move Tries to Beat Heat Field

Xtra Heat, who was retired earlier this year as one of the best female sprinters in history, already has a race named in her honor.

Belmont Park will run the $65,000 Xtra Heat this afternoon, the ninth of 10 races on its twilight program.

Scheduled at six furlongs, it attracted six fillies and mares, topped by Willa On The Move.

Owned by Peter Angelos, the 4-year-old Two Punch filly will be making her first start since Nov. 29 and her first for high-percentage trainer Tony Dutrow, who has been winning at more than a 30% rate in 2003.

Bred in Maryland, Willa On The Move won three of seven last year and was second behind You in her only Grade I appearance in the Acorn, her only previous start at Belmont Park.

John Velasquez will ride.

Completing the lineup, from the inside out, are The Fifth Element, Fresh Tracks, who has been 1-2 in eight of 10 for trainer Steve Young; Bonefide Reason, Redheat Riot and Mooji Moo.

Bonefide Reason, owned by Sunny Meadow Farm and trained by Mitchell Friedman, is the richest runner in the field.

She has earned $247,061 while winning six of 31, but is winless in seven in 2003 and winless in four races at Belmont.

Race of the day: Menacing Dennis, who was third in his comeback and first start for trainer Doug O’Neill on June 6, will try turf for the first time in tonight’s seventh, a $55,000 optional claimer at 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf, at Hollywood Park. The race is the fifth leg of a pick six with a carry-over of $79,467.

One for the road: Cozzening, bred for the surface, will get turf for the first time in his career in today’s fifth at Belmont Park, a 1 1/4-mile race for older maidens. Eibar Coa will ride the gray son of -- surprise! -- Cozzene for owners Bill Parsons and David Howe and trainer Mark Hennig. The 4-year-old should start at a healthy price because he was beaten badly in his last start over a muddy main track on May 31.

Exotically speaking: A Hollywood Park pick three singling Ulloa in the first, using all in the second and singling Flowington in the third.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 4/129. Money: Previous day/meet total: $22.60/$691.80. Total money bet: $808.
