A woman was killed and a man critically wounded when a gunman opened fire early Tuesday morning in the Hollywood Hills, authorities said.

Neighbors reported hearing arguing followed by gunshots about 4:15 a.m., police said. When officers arrived, they found the woman inside a parked silver Volkswagen Golf and the man sitting against the driver’s side being tended to by a resident. The gunman remains at large.

Police have not been able to identify the victims, both in their 20s, or establish their relationship. But they believe that the two joined their assailant at Primrose and Vista Del Mar avenues for some sort of meeting. Witnesses saw an unidentified man flee south on Vista Del Mar, said LAPD Officer John Miller.

A resident out for an early morning stroll later found a gun on the sidewalk about a block from the crime scene.

Late in the morning, stunned residents talked about the day’s events as they watched the blood-smeared car with Mexican tags being towed away.

Wilfred Biggs, a firefighter turned artist, ran to help after he heard the shots. The man “had been shot through the cheek, and the bullet had come out of the back of his head,” he said.
