Sundays Are Not the Trojans’ Day
Sunday is often considered the day of rest. Maybe the USC baseball team should adopt that philosophy.
The Trojans were pounded for the fourth consecutive Sunday. Arizona was the beneficiary this time, breaking open a close game with a seven-run sixth inning in a 16-3 Pacific 10 Conference victory at Tucson.
The Trojans (13-13, 1-2) have been outscored, 62-11, in their last four Sundays. Arizona is 21-8 overall and 2-1 in the Pac-10.
Randy Blood and Tony Festa hit home runs in support of pitcher Jaymie Torres as UC Riverside (20-4) completed a two-game sweep of visiting Sacramento State with a 6-2 victory Sunday.
Fullerton (21-5) improved its home record to 14-0 by taking all three games of a nonconference series against struggling Cal State Northridge (5-24).
Loyola Marymount (16-9, 4-2) salvaged one out of three games in its West Coast Conference series at San Francisco, winning, 7-5 Sunday.
UCLA (14-14) put up 26 hits and 20 runs in sweeping a two-game home set against Wichita State. Jacob Barrack helped Pepperdine (14-11, 5-1) take two of three from St. Mary’s with a career-high 11 strikeouts in a 6-3 victory.
Golden State Athletic Conference tournament champion Concordia (31-4) was seeded sixth in the NAIA men’s basketball tournament and will play Cumberland (Ky.) on Thursday in the first round at Kansas City.
Seventh-seeded Azusa Pacific (27-6) plays John Brown (Ark.) on Wednesday night. Unseeded Westmont (23-9) will play Thursday against Auburn Montgomery.
