Sloppy Fielding Costs UCLA in Loss to Cal

California scored four unearned runs in the top of the 10th inning, capitalizing on three UCLA errors before holding on to beat the Bruins, 7-3, in the women’s College World Series softball tournament Thursday at Oklahoma City.

Cal will play Texas, a 3-2 winner over Louisiana Lafayette, in a winners’ bracket game today. UCLA will play Louisiana Lafayette in an elimination game Saturday at 1 p.m PDT, and if the Bruins win that game, they will have to win another Saturday night at 6:30 PDT to advance.

Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh, UCLA forced extra innings on third baseman Tairia Mims’ two-out, two-run home run.

Amber Hall hit a decisive two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth and Cat Osterman struck out 11 to help Texas (48-7) win, 3-2, over Louisiana Lafayette (47-10).... Arizona’s Lovie Jung hit a two-run double to highlight a three-run third inning and Alicia Hollowell limited Alabama to two hits in the 3-2 victory for the Wildcats (55-5). Arizona will play Washington (47-14-1) in a winners’ bracket game today.... Jaime Clark hit her 17th home run and Amanda Oleson hit a two-run double in the seventh to help Washington post a 3-1 victory over Oklahoma (46-13).... Osterman was named USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year in a ceremony Wednesday night at Oklahoma City. Osterman is 30-4 with a nation-leading 0.29 earned-run average and 442 strikeouts.

USC senior Jewel Peterson advanced to the NCAA women’s singles semifinals with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Northwestern’s Cristelle Grier at Gainesville, Fla.

It is the best performance for Peterson at the individual championships and the best by a Trojan since Ditta Huber in 1999. She will play Amber Liu of Stanford in today’s semifinals.

UCLA junior Marcin Matkowski lost his second-round match in the men’s tournament to Alex Vlaski of Washington, 6-1, 6-3 at Athens, Ga. Matkowski had defeated Vlaski in straight sets to win the Pacific 10 Conference singles title.

Mikaela Parmlid shot a two-under-par 70 for a share of the individual lead and helped USC take a seven-stroke lead in the team competition in the NCAA Women’s Golf Championships at West Lafayette, Ind.

Parmlid had a four-over 220 total to top the third-round leaderboard along with Florida’s Andrea Vander Lende, who shot a tournament-best 69.

USC is at 901 and Pepperdine is in second at 908. Lindsey Wright shot 73 and is at eight-over 224 and in fourth individually for the Waves.
