Marina Rallies and Wins, 4-3

The roar that erupted after Daric Barton’s game-winning home run Friday was almost as loud as the sighs of relief an inning earlier.

Barton’s line drive over the right-field fence in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted Huntington Beach Marina to a 4-3 victory over visiting Santa Ana Mater Dei in a Southern Section Division I quarterfinal playoff game. But Barton never would have had the opportunity if not for Jason Jordan’s game-tying single with one out in the seventh.

Jordan, a senior outfielder who dropped into the No. 9 slot in the batting order as his average slipped to .174, drove in two runs after lining a 2-0 pitch from Kyle Nash into left-center field.

Nash, who had given up six hits and no earned runs before Jordan’s single, was relieved one batter later by Armando Carrasco, who got out of the inning. Carrasco gave up Barton’s game-winning homer, his 11th of the season, on the second pitch of the eighth inning.

Mater Dei first baseman Tim Stewart hit a two-run homer in the third, his 11th, for a 3-1 lead.

Moreno Valley Valley View 3, Anaheim Servite 1 -- The Eagles made the most of their second chance in the Division I playoffs as Steven Wright gave up six hits to improve his record to 10-0.

Valley View (22-7) was beaten by Lakewood, 4-3, in a second-round game Tuesday, but Lakewood was forced to forfeit the victory for taking pregame batting practice, which is against section rules.

Wright gave himself all the runs he needed with a two-run home run during the Eagles’ three-run first inning.

Servite (18-9) had runners on base in every inning except the fourth and seventh, but the Friars made several baserunning miscues and stranded six.

Santa Margarita 11, Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley 5 -- A six-run fourth inning, keyed by a three-run home run from David Huffman, propelled the Eagles to a quarterfinal upset of No. 2-seeded Capistrano Valley at Santa Margarita.

Santa Margarita (19-7) finished third in the Serra League, but the Eagles are surging in the playoffs because their seven non-senior starters are maturing. Junior Matt Cusick had a two-run triple and an RBI double. Sophomore Blair Dunlap had three hits and two RBIs.

Santa Margarita opened a 7-0 lead off losing pitcher Jason Corder. But the lead was hardly safe after Santa Margarita starter Jared Hughes walked his ninth batter to load the bases with none out in the fifth and was pulled. The Cougars (25-4) scored five runs in the inning.

North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake 2, Covina Charter Oak 0 -- Jason Glushon (12-1) out-dueled Chuckie Tiffany (7-1) as the Wolverines continued their unprecedented playoff run in a Division III quarterfinal at Franklin Field in Encino.

Glushon pitched a four-hitter, striking out seven without issuing a walk, and allowed only one runner to reach second as Harvard-Westlake (19-8) advanced to the semifinals for the first time.

Tiffany gave up eight hits, struck out four and walked one. The first three Harvard-Westlake batters got hits off Tiffany as the Wolverines (19-8) scored what proved to be the only run they would need when Brennan Boesch doubled to drive in Frank Pfister.
