GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Santa Ana Mater Dei (Chicago Mother McAuley Challenge), Los Angeles Marymount (San Jose Archbishop Mitty), Anaheim Esperanza (Capistrano Valley) and Long Beach Poly (Simi Valley Royal) won tournament titles last weekend. Manhattan Beach Mira Costa finished ninth, losing one pool play match, at the Mother McAuley Challenge. Westlake Village Westlake fell out after losing to Long Beach Poly in the Royal final and to Newbury Park in a Marmonte League match. Murrieta Valley replaces Brea Olinda, which lost to Esperanza. Torrance Bishop Montgomery took favored Lakewood St. Joseph’s in five in a Serra League opener. Los Alamitos tumbled four spots after losses to Mater Dei and Newport Harbor.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Canyon Country Canyon and Fountain Valley each move up two spots after impressive victories Saturday. Canyon easily won the Division I title in the Kenny Staub Invitational at Crescenta Valley Park in Glendale. Fountain Valley defeated Huntington Beach Marina in winning the Sunset League all-teams’ meet at Central Park in Huntington Beach. Chino Don Lugo and Murrieta Valley will race each other for the fourth time this season in the Inland Empire Challenge at Cucamonga-Guasti Regional Park in Ontario on Saturday.

Anaheim Esperanza vaults over Thousand Oaks after taking six of the top 11 places in the Sunset League all-teams’ meet at Central Park in Huntington Beach on Saturday. Fountain Valley drops a spot after finishing a distant second to Esperanza in that meet. Eight ranked teams will run in invitationals Saturday. Murrieta Valley and Hesperia Sultana will meet for the first time this season in the Inland Empire Challenge at Cucamonga-Guasti Regional Park in Ontario.

The top five teams have yet to lose. Peninsula continued to impress in recent victories over Corona del Mar, Irvine University and Redondo. Losses to Peninsula and Laguna Beach drop Corona del Mar in the rankings, but the Sea Kings are young and have played a tough schedule. Dana Point Dana Hills posted victories over Lake Forest El Toro and depleted Palm Desert, a former top 10 team. Mater Dei gambled with its perfect record against two teams in Las Vegas over the weekend and won. Santa Barbara moves up after victories over Ventura and North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake and Long Beach Wilson move to the top after beating the previously top-ranked teams Thursday. Harvard-Westlake toppled visiting Santa Ana Foothill, 11-10, in overtime only a couple of hours before Wilson dumped Anaheim Servite, 16-8, at Long Beach Belmont Plaza. Making their season debut in the top 10 are Huntington Beach Marina, which won the Villa Park tournament, and Manhattan Beach Mira Costa, which took first in the El Segundo tournament.

Alhambra Keppel had an impressive showing in winning its tournament for the first time. The Aztecs finished three shots ahead of Rolling Hills Estates Peninsula, but Peninsula split its top players between two teams. Peninsula’s best four scores were a stroke better than Keppel’s. Three days later at the Burbank Burroughs tournament, Peninsula’s “B” team shot better than its “A” team. Long Beach Wilson drops out after a 214-229 loss to Cerritos. It was Wilson’s first regular-season loss in 53 matches.
