A Happy Return for Servite

Share

Eric Terrazas didn’t score the winning touchdown, but the junior defensive back had everything to do with Anaheim Servite defeating Huntington Beach Edison, 7-0, Friday night at Orange Coast College.

Terrazas had two of the game’s biggest hits, including a big-time stick on Edison’s Joshua Gage that separated the running back from the ball at the Chargers’ 27-yard line with 5 minutes 30 seconds left before halftime.

Servite defensive back Mike Hernishin picked up with the bouncing ball and rambled down the middle of the field, along with an escort of Friars, for what turned out to be the only touchdown of the game.

Late in the fourth quarter, with Edison at the Servite 12-yard line, Terrazas blind-sided Charger sophomore quarterback Brian Shrock as he dropped back to pass on a third-and-three play.

Instead of going for the first down on the next play, Edison (3-2) decided to go for it all. However, Shrock’s pass fell short of Matt White, who was open in the end zone.

“Both plays were blitzes,” Terrazas said. “I was just trying to do anything for the team.”

It was the second consecutive shutout defeat for Edison. The Chargers, ranked No. 21 by The Times, averaged 26.5 points in their first two games.

Sophomore Ken Ashley rushed for 87 yards, the bulk of it coming on a 35-yard jaunt on the first play of the fourth quarter, for No. 22 Servite (5-0).

Shrock completed 15 of 28 passes for 142 yards. Junior running back Abel Cardona led Edison with 71 yards in 12 carries.

Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 24, Valencia 23 -- The host Knights hung on for a victory in the nonleague game when Valencia quarterback Mike Herrick overthrew wide receiver Chris Wright in the back of the end zone on a two-point conversion attempt with 3.2 seconds left to play.

Herrick, a sophomore who completed 25 of 42 passes for 176 yards and a touchdown, had scored on a one-yard sneak to cut the Vikings’ deficit to a point. But his conversion pass sailed well over the head of Wright.

“I just made a mistake,” Herrick said as he fought back tears. “I had two guys open in the back of the end zone and I just overthrew them.”

Notre Dame (4-1), ranked No. 11 by The Times, took a 24-17 lead on a 28-yard field goal by Tim Rubey with 4:57 left in the game. But No. 23 Valencia (4-1) drove 68 yards in 12 plays.

Herrick completed a 14-yard pass to Jeff Bomberger on a fourth-and-four play from the Valencia 38-yard line early in the drive, and the Vikings also benefited from a roughing-the-passer penalty.

The defending Southern Section Division III champion Knights trailed, 14-7, at halftime, but scored touchdowns on their first two possessions of the second half.

Cary Harris, who rushed for 134 yards in 15 carries, scored on a 13-yard run 48 seconds into the second half to cut Notre Dame’s deficit to 14-13.

San Clemente 44, Santa Ana Foothill 21 -- Cheyne Verhagen set a school record and the Tritons took advantage of five turnovers to hand the Knights their first loss of the season at Tustin High.

Verhagen, a senior, scored two touchdowns, breaking the school record for career touchdowns with 34. James Allen scored 33 touchdowns from 1997-99.

Verhagen, who carried 18 times for 81 yards, set the record on a 17-yard draw play in the third quarter that gave San Clemente (3-2) a 37-3 lead.

Casey Daniels completed 17 of 31 passes for 319 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions for Foothill (4-1).

Los Alamitos 31, Carson 6 -- Orlando Scandrick took inside handoffs from quarterback Jimmy Barnes and scored on runs of 57 and 37 yards for the top-ranked Griffins, who built a 21-0 lead and cruised to an intersectional victory at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach.

Carson (2-3) out-gained Los Alamitos (5-0) in total yardage, 296-245, but failed to covert many of its third- and fourth-down situations deep in Griffin territory. One drive that reached the 21-yard line midway through the second quarter ended with an incomplete pass on fourth down.

Robert Miller had 110 yards in 15 carries for the Colts, who scored on Carlton Smith’s 18-yard run midway through the third quarter that made the score 21-6.

A week after completing a school-record 28 passes in a victory over La Habra, Barnes threw only 11 passes, completing five for 101 yards. The junior connected with Jeremy Childs for a 13-yard touchdown on Los Alamitos’ first drive of the game.
