Streep to be honored with AFI award
Two-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep was named Friday to receive the American Film Institute’s 32nd Life Achievement Award, whose previous recipients include James Stewart, Jack Lemmon, Elizabeth Taylor, Dustin Hoffman, Tom Hanks and Robert De Niro. AFI board chairman Howard Stringer hailed the actress as “one of the great artists in the history of American film.”
Streep, 54, will be feted at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood on June 10. The proceedings will be taped for subsequent showing on the USA Network.
Streep made her screen debut in “Julia” in 1977 and went on to star in “Silkwood,” “Out of Africa,” “Postcards From the Edge,” “The River Wild” and “The Bridges of Madison County.” She won Oscars for “Kramer vs. Kramer” (1979) and “Sophie’s Choice” (1982).
