Plimpton wills space to journal

George Plimpton left the bulk of his $5.5-million estate to his wife and children and expressed a wish for the Paris Review literary journal to continue operating out of his Manhattan apartment.

In papers filed Monday in Surrogate Court in Manhattan, Plimpton said that “it is my wish and hope that the space in my apartment ... which is currently made available rent free to the Paris Review, shall continue to be made available without charge for so long as reasonably possible.”

Plimpton, who died last month at age 76, helped found the journal in 1953 with an aim to emphasize literature over literary criticism. He edited the magazine until his death. No replacement has been named; in 2000, a foundation was established to ensure that the magazine would continue after Plimpton.
