Williams, Washington Open It Up

Give Reggie Williams the ball with some open space at midfield, and it’s usually six points for the Washington Huskies.

Cody Pickett threw two of his three touchdown passes to Williams as No. 22 Washington beat Indiana, 38-13, Saturday at Seattle to hand Keith Gilbertson his first victory as coach of the Huskies.

Pickett and Williams combined on a 70-yard touchdown that ignited a 28-0 burst in the third quarter. The Huskies tied a school record for points in a quarter, done three times previously.

“If you give me an open field like that, I feel I’m going to score every time,” Williams said.

The Hoosiers (0-2) led 13-10 after Bryan Robertson kicked a 39-yard field goal on the first drive of the second half.

Moments later, Pickett threw a 10-yard crossing strike to Williams and the All-American receiver turned it into a 70-yard touchdown reception.

“I just waited for that backer to clear out, then when Reggie came open I put it on his chest,” Pickett said.

Pickett completed 18 of 26 passes for 290 yards with one interception. Williams had four catches for 98 yards and two touchdowns for the Huskies (1-1).

No. 13 Louisiana State 59, Arizona 13 -- Matt Mauck completed nine of 10 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown, then watched the reserves finish as the Tigers (2-0) routed the Wildcats (1-1) at Tucson.

Joseph Addai carried 18 times for 86 yards and a pair of scores in LSU’s most one-sided road victory since the Tigers beat Tulane, 62-0, in 1958.

It was the third-worst home loss for the Wildcats, behind a 75-0 beating by Michigan State in 1949 and a 65-12 loss to Colorado in 1958.

No. 20 Arizona State 34, Northern Arizona 14 -- R.J. Oliver awakened the Sun Devils (1-0) with a 100-yard interception return to lead them over the Division I-AA Lumberjacks (1-1) at Tempe, Ariz., in their first meeting in 53 years.

Andrew Walter dominated the game, as expected, throwing for 224 yards and four touchdowns, but it took Oliver’s length-of-the-field defensive gem on the first play of the second quarter to liven up the sluggish Sun Devils in their opener.

Walter spread the ball around during a 15-for-24 performance, throwing touchdowns of 29 and 38 yards to Moey Mutz, eight yards to Loren Wade and 40 yards to Derek Hagan.

Colorado State 23, California 21 -- Jeff Babcock’s 32-yard field goal with 1:57 left lifted the Rams (1-1) over the Golden Bears (1-2) at Berkeley.

The kick capped an 11-play, 65-yard drive that was kept alive by a 25-yard pass from Bradlee Van Pelt to Matt Bartz on a fourth-and-three play.

Van Pelt finished with 317 yards passing and 60 yards rushing and David Alexander had seven receptions for 141 yards.

Oregon 31, Nevada 23 -- Samie Parker caught seven passes for 162 yards and two scores and the Ducks (2-0) held off a second-half rally by the Wolf Pack (1-1) at Eugene, Ore.

Oregon used co-quarterbacks Kellen Clemens and Jason Fife to confuse the Wolf Pack, which couldn’t quite catch up after the Ducks built a 24-7 first-half lead.

Clemens completed 10 of 24 passes for 154 yards and two scores, and while Fife was three of four for 57 yards and a touchdown.

Stanford 31, San Jose State 10 -- Luke Powell caught 12 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Cardinal (1-0) over the Spartans (1-2) at Palo Alto.

Freshman Trent Edwards passed for 278 yards after relieving Chris Lewis in the second quarter, and J.R. Lemon rushed for 103 yards and two touchdowns for Stanford.
