Harvick Fined for Fight

Stock car driver Kevin Harvick was fined $35,000 and put on probation Monday, and two of his crew members were suspended for one race for their roles in the melee at Richmond International Raceway.

In all, NASCAR penalized Harvick and five members of his team, along with Pat Tryson, Ricky Rudd’s crew chief, for “actions detrimental to stock car racing.”

Harvick was put on probation until Dec. 31, while crew members Mike Scearce and Gene Pasquale were suspended until Sept. 17, meaning they will miss Sunday’s race in Loudon, N.H.

Harvick crew members Kirk Almquist and Ken Barber were each fined $2,500 and placed on probation until Dec. 31, and Tryson was fined $5,000 for their parts in the fight Saturday night in Richmond, Va.

Hockey

Doug Gilmour retired after an NHL career in which he played 20 seasons and won a Stanley Cup with the Calgary Flames in 1989. Gilmour, 40, played for seven teams and had 450 goals and 964 assists.

New York Ranger defenseman Brian Leetch, 35, is out indefinitely because of an injury to his left ankle similar to the one that caused him to sit out nearly half of last season.

Basketball

Orlando Magic guard Grant Hill hopes to return by February, but he conceded it might be best for him to wait until the 2004-05 season to play again on his surgically repaired left ankle.

Defending champion Serbia and Montenegro advanced to the quarterfinals of the European Championships with an 80-76 victory over Turkey at Boras, Sweden, led by Clipper Marko Jaric’s 18 points.

In other games, Russia beat Croatia, 81-77; Israel beat Slovenia, 78-76; and Italy eliminated Germany 86-84.

Penn State 6-foot-5 senior guard Jamaal Tate will redshirt this season because of a drinking problem.

The UCLA and USC men’s teams will avoid a trip to the Palouse this Pacific 10 Conference season as the Bruins’ and Trojans’ respective games at Washington State will be held at Spokane Arena rather than at the Cougars’ on-campus Friel Court in Pullman, Wash. UCLA and Washington State play on Jan. 8 with a 7 p.m. tipoff. The Trojans face the Cougars two days later at 1 p.m.

Tennis

Ninth-seeded Ashley Harkleroad lost, 6-3, 6-2, to Saori Obata of Japan in the first round of the Wismilak International at Bali, Indonesia.

Fourth-seeded David Sanchez of Spain beat countryman Alex Corretja, 6-2, 6-3, to reach the second round of the Romania Open at Bucharest.

Golf

Medalist Bob Kulp and defending champion Greg Reynolds were eliminated in the opening round of match play in the USGA Senior Amateur at Bristol, Va.

Kulp, of Winston-Salem, N.C., was ousted by Preston Davis, of San Juan Capistrano, 3 and 2, the same score Reynolds, of Grand Blanc, Mich., lost by to Fred Silver, of Lewiston, N.Y.

Four-time defending champion Carol Semple Thompson of Sewickley, Pa., won her opening-round match, 4 and 3, over Gwendolyn Tierney of Anderson, Ind., in the USGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championship at Austin, Texas.

Miscellany

U.S. cyclist Amber Neben of Irvine tested positive for a banned substance but is challenging the results.

The new Anaheim team of the National Lacrosse League will play its first game Jan. 10 against Arizona at the Arrowhead Pond.

Passings

Harold Rose, who was involved in horse racing as a trainer, owner and breeder for more than half a century, died Monday in Miami. He was 92.
