Arizona State Is Punished by Iowa, 21-2

First it was Ben Roethlisberger, now it’s Andrew Walter. Iowa’s defense is making highly regarded quarterbacks look ordinary.

No. 18 Iowa harassed Walter into his least productive game as a starter and got three touchdown passes from Nathan Chandler in beating No. 16 Arizona State, 21-2, Saturday night at Iowa City, Iowa.

Earlier, the Hawkeyes (4-0) intercepted Roethlisberger four times in a 21-3 victory over Miami of Ohio, which was touting its quarterback as a Heisman Trophy contender.

“We always want to go into a game like this with a chip on our shoulder,” Iowa linebacker Abdul Hodge said. “We wanted to go out and give them a good test and give them a good ballgame. That’s what we did.”

Iowa was able to pressure Walter with a four-man rush and he rarely had time to look downfield. His longest gain was 16 yards and he completed only 25 of 44 passes for 160 yards and one interception. That was the fewest yards for Walter in the 13 games he has started.

“They didn’t do anything coverage-wise we didn’t think they would do,” said Walter, who had thrown six touchdown passes in his first two games. “They just did a good job of covering. They’re not complicated. They’re just good at what they do.”

Arizona State (2-1), which had been averaging 404.5 yards and 30 points a game, couldn’t capitalized on the momentum from an early safety and was held to 24 yards rushing and 184 total yards.

After Walter’s 16-yard pass to fullback Mike Karney on the first play of the second quarter, Arizona State did not make another first down until the 5:58 mark in the third quarter -- and that was on a roughing the passer penalty.

“I thought our defense and our special teams did their part, but offensively, we didn’t answer the bell,” Coach Dirk Koetter said. “We stunk. Our offense stunk and that starts with me.”

Fred Russell had 154 yards rushing in 27 carries for Iowa, off to its best start since 1997.

No. 19 Washington 45, Idaho 14 -- Rich Alexis ran for 116 yards and two touchdowns and defensive lineman Terry Johnson recovered a fumble for an early score to lead the Huskies (2-1) over the Vandals (0-4) at Seattle.

Alexis had a 26-yard touchdown run, Zach Tuiasosopo had a 12-yard scoring run and quarterback Cody Pickett had a nine-yarder as Washington pulled away and beat overmatched Idaho for the fourth consecutive year.

It also marked a victory for Washington Coach Keith Gilbertson over his former school. He coached the Vandals from 1986 to ‘88, and one of his assistants at Idaho -- and later at California -- was current Idaho Coach Tom Cable.

No. 24 Washington State 23, New Mexico 13 -- Drew Dunning kicked a school-record five field goals to lead the Cougars (3-1) over the Lobos (1-3) at Pullman, Wash.

The Cougars had a difficult time figuring out the Lobos’ defense and didn’t score a touchdown until late in the third quarter, when quarterback Matt Kegel pushed across from the one-yard line.

Kegel was ineffective in the red zone but completed 29 of 42 passes for 346 yards without an interception. The Cougars got 27 first downs to New Mexico’s 12 and held the Lobos to only 22 yards rushing.

No. 25 Purdue 59, Arizona 7 -- Kyle Orton threw three touchdown passes and Jerod Void and Jerome Brooks each ran for two touchdowns as the Boilermakers (2-1) coasted over the Wildcats (1-3) at West Lafayette, Ind.

Void carried 12 times for 60 yards and two scores before leaving. Brooks finished with 21 carries for 122 yards in backup duty, and Orton completed 16 of 28 passes for 261 yards, including a career-long 81-yard touchdown pass to John Standeford, before being pulled late in the third quarter.

The Boilermakers tied for the most points scored in one game since Coach Joe Tiller took over in 1997. Purdue defeated Minnesota, 59-43, on Oct. 11, 1997.

Stanford 18, Brigham Young 14 -- Quarterback Trent Edwards scored on a 14-yard run with 3:51 left and the defense held at the finish to lead the Cardinal (2-0) over the Cougars (2-2) at Provo, Utah.

John Beck, a freshman making his first start, drove BYU to the Stanford nine-yard line in the last minute, but the game ended when Jared Newberry stopped Beck on fourth down.

Stanford’s Kenneth Tolon rushed 32 times for 141 yards in the first-ever meeting involving the schools.

Oregon State 26, Boise State 24 -- Derek Anderson threw for 408 yards and James Newson had nine receptions for 208 yards at Corvallis, Ore., as the Beavers (3-1) ended the Broncos’ 13-game winning streak.

Ryan Dinwiddie completed 19 of 36 passes for 334 yards for the Broncos (2-1), who missed a chance to take the lead with 7:32 left when Tyler Jones’ 32-yard field-goal attempt sailed wide right.

The Beavers’ Steven Jackson, the Pac-10’s leading rusher, ran for 122 yards in 30 carries.
