There was a rough run into the first turn, but fortunately for Don’tsellmeshort and jockey Ryan Fogelsonger, they were near the front and clear of the trouble.

So while three horses were eliminated early, Don’tsellmeshort went on to a 1 1/4-length win Sunday over Fountain Grove in the $122,898 Barretts Juvenile at Fairplex Park. I’m Awesome Again finished third in the 6 1/2-furlong race.

Presumption, breaking from the No. 1 post under Omar Berrio in the eight-horse field, couldn’t handle the sharp clubhouse turn and veered to the outside. Victimized were Rush Into Heaven, the 2-1 second choice, and Devoted Lover, who finished far back.

Don’tsellmeshort, trained by Dan Hendricks and owned by Cecil Peacock, reached the wire in 1:18 3/5 and paid $4.20 to win.

Fogelsonger, a newcomer to the Southern California jockey colony, rode Don’tsellmeshort for the first time after Pat Valenzuela had been aboard in the gray colt’s five previous starts. Don’tsellmeshort now has three wins and two seconds.

At Belmont Park, Jerry Bailey rode Stroll to a two-length win over Kicken Kris in the $200,000 Jamaica Handicap. Joe Bear ran third.

Stroll, trained by Bill Mott, paid $4.80 as the favorite, running 1 1/8 miles on grass in 1:46. The 3-year-old colt has won four straight races.

After Evening Attire worked six furlongs in 1:13 1/5 at Belmont, trainer Pat Kelly said he wasn’t sure whether the 5-year-old gelding would run in the $1-million Jockey Club Gold Cup next Saturday. Evening Attire won the stake last year, but has won only one of five stakes starts since then. Mineshaft, the expected favorite, is running in the Gold Cup, along with Belmont Stakes winner Empire Maker and Moon Ballad, who won this year’s Dubai World Cup.

If Evening Attire doesn’t run Saturday, he’ll probably go in the Meadowlands Cup in New Jersey on Oct. 3. Either way, Kelly said that Evening Attire is doubtful for the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita on Oct. 25. The horse finished fourth in last year’s Classic at Arlington Park.
