Career Over for Empire Maker?
Empire Maker, the Belmont Stakes winner, probably won’t run in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, which was to be the last race of his sterling but troubled career.
“There’s a good chance he won’t run again, in my opinion,” trainer Bobby Frankel told Associated Press.
Frankel was forced to pull Empire Maker from Saturday’s Jockey Club Gold Cup because he reinjured a foot that may have led to a second-place finish in the Kentucky Derby.
Empire Maker, just short of $2 million in purses, won two Grade I races -- the Florida Derby and the Wood Memorial -- besides the Belmont.
“It’s too bad if he doesn’t run again,” jockey Jerry Bailey said. “He was the best 3-year-old I ever rode.”
