Car Driver Killed as Vehicle Hits Bus, Hurting 16 Passengers
A driver fleeing an accident crashed into a DASH commuter bus in Watts on Monday, killing himself and critically injuring two bus passengers, police said.
The driver, Brian Watson, 31, of Los Angeles, sped through a stop sign at McKinley Avenue and East 90th Street about 1:45 p.m. and struck the bus, said Officer Jason Lee, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department.
The impact caused the bus to spin around with the car, said Brian Humphrey, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Watson died at the scene. Firefighters used heavy equipment to free his body.
Two passengers were thrown from the bus and trapped beneath it, Humphrey said. They were hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
Fourteen other bus passengers -- nine adults and five children -- were treated at hospitals for injuries that were not serious, Humphrey said. The names of the injured were not released.
Watson had been fleeing a minor collision at 90th Street and Central Avenue, police said.
Officers are investigating the accident.
