NBA Suspends Grizzlies’ Williams

Memphis Grizzly point guard Jason Williams was suspended for one game without pay by the NBA on Tuesday for making contact and berating an official during Monday’s loss to the Utah Jazz.

Williams’ tirade occurred after he was called for a foul with 15 seconds remaining in the second quarter.

The starting point guard will serve his suspension tonight, when the Grizzlies play host to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Houston Rockets activated forward Kelvin Cato and released forward Charles Oakley, who joined the team on a 10-day contract last month.

Cato, a starter in 64 of his 65 games, has missed the last 10 games because of a sprained shoulder.

Oakley, who played for Rocket Coach Jeff Van Gundy with the New York Knicks, averaged 1.3 points and less than a rebound in seven games.

Phoenix Sun reserve point guard Howard Eisley probably will miss the rest of the season after undergoing hernia surgery last week. ... The Cavaliers waived point guard Mateen Cleaves two days before his 10-day contract expired after activating Jeff McInnis, who had been on the injured list because of a bruised right shoulder. Cleaves averaged 3.8 points in his four games with Cleveland.
