Sewage Spill Closes 500 Feet of Beach

A sewage spill caused by a broken pipeline in the city’s collection system prompted health officials Wednesday to close 500 feet of beach on either side of Rockledge Road to water sports.
About 500 gallons of sewage spilled into a private area that is accessible only through a locked gate, said Monica Mazur of the county Health Care Agency.
Though the area is mostly inaccessible, the agency took the action as a precaution because some people can get there, Mazur said.
The agency will not monitor the bacteria levels, noting that such spills usually dissipate within three days.
