Alarmed by the growing number of attacks on police officers, the City Council agreed Wednesday to increase from $25,000 to $75,000 the reward for information leading to those who shoot at officers.

Police Chief William J. Bratton said officers were shot at 40 times last year.

“You’d think we were in the middle of Baghdad,” said Bratton during a news conference, pointing to a display of weapons used against officers.
