A California Highway Patrol officer suffered a broken ankle when his motorcycle hit a car that was changing lanes erratically on the Costa Mesa Freeway, officials said.

Authorities are searching for the owner of a red Chevrolet Corsica with rear-end damage; the car was found abandoned in Orange, CHP Officer Ken Yoon said.

The officer was driving in the carpool lane when the car cut off the officer, who was thrown from his bike, Yoon said.
