Man Killed After Elevator Cable Snaps
A freight elevator in a midtown building that had recently been cited for several elevator violations crashed, killing a security guard who was leaving work for the day.
Carl Declercq, 63, of Staten Island, was descending in the elevator when a cable providing a counterweight snapped, police said. The elevator shot up from the 19th floor and crashed into the bottom of the roof at the 37th floor. Declercq was pronounced dead at the scene.
Another elevator carrying two people dropped to the ground floor as a result of the cord snapping, but the passengers were not injured, police said.
