Authorities are investigating why a Los Angeles Police Department cruiser smashed through the wall of a South L.A. building Friday night, temporarily trapping two officers inside the car.

The incident occurred shortly after 9 p.m. near 101st and South Main streets. Two officers in the car had to be extricated by Los Angeles Fire Department crews and were taken to the hospital.

“The officers are OK, they’re going to be fine,” LAPD spokesman Don Cox said.

He said investigators were trying to confirm initial reports that the officers were responding to an emergency call when their cruiser was cut off by another vehicle and swerved into the building to avoid a collision.

“We’re not sure what happened yet,” he said.

Television helicopter footage showed a police car half-embedded in a small, wood-frame structure. Cox said no one was in the building.
