The city has been awarded a $3.7-million federal grant to boost its number of police officers.

City officials said the money, one of the largest amounts awarded by the Justice Department this year as part of its community policing program, will be used to hire 50 officers.

Mayor Gavin Newsom and Police Chief Heather Fong said the Police Department will increase the number of officers around BART stations in the Mission district and certain areas of Market Street. Some existing officers will be concentrated in the city’s rougher neighborhoods, including Hunters Point, Visitacion Valley and the Western Addition.
