Ramirez Is Hurt in Red Sox Win

Manny Ramirez singled and scored before leaving because of of a bruised knee, and the streaking Boston Red Sox beat the Detroit Tigers, 5-3, Friday night at Fenway Park for their 10th victory in 11 games.

Ricky Gutierrez singled three times and drove in two runs to help the Red Sox win for the 13th time in 16 games and improve to a season-high 21 games over .500.

The win was tempered by the loss of Ramirez, who fouled a pitch off his left knee. X-rays were negative and he was listed as day to day.

Derek Lowe (12-10) yielded three runs and seven hits in eight innings, striking out seven. He won for the sixth time in his last eight decisions while improving to 6-1 lifetime against Detroit.

The Red Sox used three relievers in the ninth: Mike Timlin, Alan Embree and Curtis Leskanic. Each got one out, and Leskanic retired Brandon Inge with runners at the corners for his third save.

New York 8, Toronto 7 -- Derek Jeter, Hideki Matsui and Bernie Williams hit home runs for the Yankees, who held on to win at Toronto. Carlos Delgado’s three-run homer cut New York’s lead to 8-7 in the seventh. Paul Quantrill allowed two runners to reach in the eighth, but Tom Gordon got Orlando Hudson to ground out to end the threat.

Texas 6, Baltimore 4 -- John Wasdin (2-2), recalled earlier in the day from triple-A Oklakoma, pitched six strong innings at Arlington, Texas, and the Rangers handed the Orioles their 11th consecutive loss. With their 11th win in 14 games, the Rangers remained two games behind Boston in the wild-card race.

Cleveland 6, Chicago 3 -- C.C. Sabathia (10-8) struck out 11 in six innings, and Ronnie Belliard hit a three-run homer to lead the Indians at Cleveland.

The Indians won for only the second time in 12 games. The White Sox lost for the seventh time in nine games.

Oakland 8, Tampa Bay 7 -- Erubiel Durazo hit a two-run homer, and Eric Chavez and Marco Scutaro also homered as the A’s rallied from a four-run deficit at Oakland. The A’s, who have won five in a row and 10 of 11, maintained their one-game lead over the Angels in the West Division.

Seattle 7, Kansas City 5 -- Bret Boone hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning, one of the Mariners’ season-high six home runs. The teams combined for nine home runs to match the most ever hit in a game at Safeco Field, which opened July 15, 1999.
