Garcia to Miss Another Start Because of Injury

Chicago White Sox right-hander Freddy Garcia will miss his second straight start Wednesday because of tightness in his right forearm.

Jason Grilli will start in Garcia’s place against the Oakland Athletics.

Garcia is 10-10, and has gone 6-3 since the White Sox acquired him in a trade from Seattle on June 27. Grilli is 0-1 after being called up from triple-A Charlotte last week to start for Garcia last Friday.

Garcia threw on the side Sunday in Cleveland.

“His velocity was there, but he felt tightness after 15 pitches,” White Sox Manager Ozzie Guillen said Monday. “He stopped because we don’t want him to be worse. I don’t think it’s serious because it’s a muscle thing.”

Also Monday, reliever Mike Jackson, whose 1,005 appearances rank eighth all-time among pitchers, was put on waivers by the White Sox for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release.

Jackson, 39, was 2-0 with a 5.01 earned-run average in 45 appearances for Chicago this season, his 19th in the major leagues.

The right-hander is 62-67 with a 3.42 ERA and 142 saves lifetime.

“That’s baseball, man. I came here in spring training and gave everything I had.... Things didn’t work out and they made a decision,” Jackson said. “I’ve got to live with it.”

Slugger Jason Giambi is expected to rejoin the New York Yankees today to continue his rehabilitation.

The five-time All-Star has not played since July 23. He was diagnosed with a benign tumor last month.

Giambi hopes to again play for the Yankees before the regular season ends. The team has not set a timetable for his return.
