‘The Blue Boy’

Junior aristocrat painted by Thomas Gainsborough

“The Blue Boy” will be on the move in 2005. The celebrated blue-clad lad, now in the main portrait gallery of the Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens, will be relocated temporarily to an adjacent gallery in preparation for a major renovation of the mansion. But there’s no reason for the boy to be blue; he’ll be joined by “Pinkie,” the portrait of young Sarah Barrett Moulton by Thomas Lawrence.

Tim Hawkinson

Artist

The work of Hawkinson, best known for large-scale kinetic and sound-producing sculptures, is coming this summer to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in the artist’s first major retrospective. Visitors may see a bit more of Hawkinson than they expected: He often uses his own body as subject, as in “Emoter” (2002), altered ink-jet print, monitor, stepladder and mechanical components.

Paul Schimmel

Chief curator

Schimmel, curator of 1992’s walk on the dark side, “Helter Skelter: L.A. Art in the 1990s,” is the man behind the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art’s fall show “Ecstasy: In and About Altered States,” featuring works of artists that explore “alternative means of perception,” with or without the influence of assorted hallucinogens.
