Boylan Scores 20, but Northridge Can’t Handle Pacific

Forward Tyler Newton and guard Miah Davis each scored 22 points Saturday night and Pacific defeated host Cal State Northridge, 86-78, for its fourth consecutive Big West Conference victory.

Ian Boylan scored 20 points and Davin White had 16 for Northridge (7-10, 3-6), which lost for the fourth time in its last five games.

Pacific (13-7, 8-1 Big West) used an 18-4 run to take a 33-12 lead after a three-point basket by center Guillaume Yango with 8 minutes 33 seconds to go in the first half.

But Northridge responded in the next 2 1/2 minutes by scoring 12 consecutive points and trailed, 33-28, after a three-pointer by guard Sergei Lepiashinski.

Pacific had an 11-0 run to take a 55-44 lead in the second half.

Later, the Tigers used a 13-3 run for a 70-53 cushion with 8:51 to play. Northridge cut that margin to 76-71 with 2:56 to go when Boylan made two free throws, but that was as close as the Matadors got.

Northridge announced that juniors Joseph Frazier and Chris Davis, and freshman Andre Foy, who had been suspended for violating team rules, would not return this season.

Utah State 84, Long Beach State 46 -- Nate Harris posted the first double-double of his career, scoring 26 points and pulling down 11 rebounds to lead the Aggies at Logan, Utah.

It was the 14th consecutive victory for the Aggies (17-1, 9-0).

Louis Darby led Long Beach State (6-12, 4-5 Big West) with 11 points. The 49ers scored only one field goal in the last 9:17.

The 49ers said that Oklahoma State forward Onye Ibekwe has transferred to Long Beach State and will be eligible to play for the 49ers at the end of the fall semester in the 2004-2005 season.

Ibekwe, a 6-foot-7, 245-pound sophomore from Crenshaw High, was a redshirt this season but played in 11 games as a freshman last season.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 84, UC Riverside 70 -- Shane Schilling had 18 points and 10 rebounds, and the host Mustangs (8-9, 3-6) shot a season-high 57% from the field.

Riverside (6-11, 3-6) shot 40% and took more three-point shots (27) than two-point shots (26).

Mark Peters led Riverside with 20 points. Nate Carter had 17 and Kevin Butler had 16.

Idaho 57, UC Irvine 52 -- Tyrone Hayes scored 20 points and the Vandals (6-12, 3-6) used a handful of key defensive stops down the stretch at Moscow, Idaho, to end a two-game conference losing streak and beat the Anteaters (9-9, 4-5) for the first time in eight tries.

Irvine lost its third consecutive conference game and was unable to capitalize on Adam Parada’s season-high 26 points. The 7-foot center had 11 rebounds and blocked three shots.

UC Santa Barbara 77, Cal State Fullerton 44 -- The host Gauchos set a school record by limiting Fullerton to nine points in the first half.

The Gauchos (12-6, 6-3) held the Titans (6-12, 2-7) to 15% shooting in the first 20 minutes and 23% for the game, the lowest percentage in Fullerton history. The nine first-half points were an all-time low for the Titans.

Santa Barbara, which shot 52%, was led by Joe See’s 21 points.

The Gaucho reserves outscored Fullerton’s entire team, 54-44, with Cecil Brown contributing 12 points and Casey Cook scoring 10.
