Planned Parenthood Won’t Release Records

Officials from Planned Parenthood of San Diego and Imperial counties said Friday that they would not comply with a subpoena from the U.S. government seeking medical records of women who have had abortions.

The Planned Parenthood chapter is one of six that have received subpoenas in a legal case in which the organization is suing the government to overturn a law banning late-term abortions. Officials said handing over records would violate patients’ privacy.

“We’re not going to hand over any records,” said Jennifer Coburn, a spokeswoman for the San Diego-based chapter. “What the Department of Justice is suggesting right now is unacceptable.”
