A man who burst into the home of baby-sitting grandparents and shot both of them, one fatally, barricaded himself in a house nearby for hours on Wednesday before shooting himself to death, Monterey Park police said.

Officers said the assailant, described only as a heavyset man, shot the lock off the grandparents’ duplex in the 400 block of West Riggin Street about 10:30 a.m. and barged inside, shooting the couple. Their infant grandchild was not injured.

He then fled to a house at the back of the property, and barricaded himself inside, Monterey Park police Lt. Tina Gorajewski said.

Police evacuated about 60 homes, but couldn’t establish communication with the man. The standoff continued into the night, until police fired tear gas into the house and ordered the man out.

They found him inside with a bullet wound to the head, police said.

The shooting victims, both in their 60s, were taken to County-USC Medical Center, where the man died. His wife was listed as stable, police said. They were not identified.

Police did not know the motive for the attack. “At this time we do not believe he is related to the victims,” Gorajewski said.
