Ailing Stephens Leads No. 3 Texas Past Kansas

Even at less than full strength, Stacy Stephens was too much for Kansas to handle.

Texas’ senior forward, who is still recovering from surgery in June on her Achilles’ tendon, had a season-high 26 points in third-ranked Texas’ 73-54 victory over the Jayhawks in the Big 12 opener for both teams Wednesday at Lawrence, Kan.

Texas (13-1) extended its winning streak to six games and beat the Jayhawks (7-5) for the fifth straight time.

No. 4 Connecticut 82, West Virginia 57 -- Diana Taurasi had 14 points as Connecticut rebounded from its first loss this season.

The Huskies (10-1) lost Saturday to Duke, ending a 69-game home winning streak.

Yolanda Paige scored 14 points for West Virginia (9-4, 1-1) at Morgantown, W.Va.

No. 11 Kansas St. 95, Missouri 59 -- Nicole Ohlde scored 31 points and Laurie Koehn added a season-high 25 as the Wildcats (10-2) picked up their 26th straight regular-season home win in their Big 12 opener. Stretch James and MyEsha Perkins had 11 points apiece for Missouri (9-3).

No. 14 Colorado 69, No. 24 Baylor 59 -- Kate Fagan scored 17 points and Tera Bjorklund added 16 to lead the Buffaloes (12-1) at Waco, Texas. Steffanie Blackmon led Baylor (12-2) with 15 points.

No. 15 Oklahoma 70, Nebraska 51 -- Maria Villarroel scored 19 points as the Sooners (11-1, 1-0) scored 26 points off turnovers at home. Kea Cannon led Nebraska (10-2, 0-1) with 15 points.

Rutgers 56, No. 16 Virginia Tech 43 -- The host Scarlet Knights (8-4, 1-0) upset a ranked team for the third time in less than a month. Virginia Tech (12-1, 1-1) was held to a season-low point total.

No. 20 Boston College 73, Providence 53 -- Jessalyn Deveny scored 17 points at Providence, R.I., as the Eagles extended the best start in school history. The Eagles (12-1, 2-0) scored 27 points off a season-high 28 turnovers for Providence. Jama Gilmore led Providence (4-9, 0-2) with 13 points.

Villanova 58, No. 24 Miami 55 -- Liad Suez scored 26 points and made the winning shot with 25 seconds left for the Wildcats (11-2, 1-1) at home. Courtney Mix forced two Miami turnovers in the final minute of Villanova’s eighth straight win over Miami (12-1, 1-1). Tamara James and Chanivia Broussard had 12 points apiece for the Hurricanes.
