2nd Police Clash Seen on Video
A local television station aired a home video late Wednesday showing Los Angeles police officers apparently striking a man several times with a flashlight after he allegedly threw a bottle at an officer and ran from police.
Mayor James K. Hahn called for an investigation of the incident, which was aired on KTTV-TV Channel 11 and reportedly occurred June 19 during a party in South Los Angeles. Police Chief William J. Bratton told the station that officers apparently used appropriate force in subduing the man.
Police identified the man as 37-year-old Curtis Gibson of Los Angeles.
LAPD sources, who asked not be identified, said Gibson had a confrontation with a bouncer at the party and police were called. They said the officers struggled with Gibson after he threw a bottle at one of them, cutting the officer’s head, and placed his hand on the officer’s gun.
The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office has filed five felony counts against Gibson, including several counts of assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and trying to gain control of an officer’s weapon.
Gibson is being held at the Men’s Central Jail in lieu of $250,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear in court Friday.
