White Sox Top Tigers and Move Into First

Joe Crede hit a two-run double in the seventh inning and a game-ending home run in the ninth to rally the Chicago White Sox over the Detroit Tigers, 7-6, Saturday night at Chicago.

In front of their sixth sellout crowd of the season at home, the White Sox won their fourth consecutive game and moved ahead of Minnesota into the American League Central lead. The White Sox trailed, 4-0, in the fifth inning and 6-2 in the seventh before coming back to send the Tigers to their sixth loss in eight games.

The White Sox scored three times in the seventh on Crede’s double off Jason Johnson and Willie Harris’ sacrifice fly.

Carlos Lee walked against Esteban Yan leading off the eighth, took second on Carl Everett’s grounder, advanced on a wild pitch, then tied it on Paul Konerko’s sacrifice fly.

Crede homered with one out in the ninth on a 3-and-2 pitch from Ugueth Urbina (3-5), the fourth game-ending homer of Crede’s career.

Konerko and Jose Valentin also homered for Chicago, which has won eight in a row against division rivals.

Cleveland 10-4, Kansas City 2-3 -- Rookie Grady Sizemore’s RBI single with two out in the ninth inning gave the Indians a sweep of a day-night doubleheader against the Royals at Cleveland. Chad Durbin pitched a six-hitter to lead the Indians in the first game.

Baltimore 4, Minnesota 2 -- Miguel Tejada homered and drove in two runs to back pitcher Sidney Ponson at Baltimore, and the Orioles ended the Twins’ five-game winning streak.

Toronto 4, Tampa Bay 2 -- Josh Towers won his third straight start, and the Blue Jays defeated the struggling Devil Rays at Toronto. Tampa Bay has lost five in a row overall and eight in a row on the road.

Former Cy Young Award winner Pat Hentgen retired in the middle of a poor season for the Toronto Blue Jays. Hentgen, 35, is 2-9 with a 6.95 earned-run average after returning to the Blue Jays last off-season.... The Boston Red Sox acquired right-handed reliever Terry Adams from the Toronto Blue Jays for a minor leaguer. Adams, 31, went 4-4 with a 3.98 ERA in 42 games this season.
