Tyrone Marshall scored in the fifth minute of second-half injury time to lift the Galaxy to a 2-2 tie with the Kansas City Wizards on Saturday night in front of 9,505 at Arrowhead Stadium.

The tie kept the Galaxy (9-5-6) in first place in the Western Conference, one point ahead of the Wizards (9-4-5). Kansas City extended its unbeaten streak to nine games.

Marshall’s glancing header off a cross by Andreas Herzog came about one minute before the final whistle. It was Marshall’s first goal this season.

“We had a bitter taste in our mouths after they came to our place and won,” Marshall said, referring to a 2-1 June 5 loss at the Home Depot Center. “I was sitting on the sideline during that game and I was frustrated. Coming out here tonight, I knew I didn’t want to have that bad taste in my mouth again.”

Second-half substitute Jack Jewsbury scored a goal for Kansas City and assisted on the Wizards’ other goal, the eighth of the season for Davy Arnaud. Both goals came in a span of about two minutes.

Jewsbury put the Wizards ahead, 2-0, in the 61st minute with a right-footed blast from about 30 yards.

Sasha Victorine scored for the Galaxy in the 67th minute to cut the lead to 2-1.

“We showed some character tonight,” Galaxy Coach Sigi Schmid said. “We were the better team the majority of the game. We had a three-minute blackout where we allowed the goals, but for the other 87 minutes plus, we were the better team.”

Wizard goalkeeper Tony Meola expressed his frustration.

“We blew it,” Meola said. “We were up 2-0 at home and played the last three corner kicks like we were in preseason.... If we are going to win a championship, we can’t allow that to happen.”

A shoving match involving numerous players broke out in the 75th minute when Kansas City’s Jimmy Conrad picked up the ball after the Galaxy was awarded a free kick just outside the Wizard penalty area.

Play was delayed for about three minutes while the officials separated the players. Referee Hector Tobon gave a yellow card to Galaxy forward Carlos Ruiz, the only card given as a result of the incident.
