A Riverside County man who killed his wife and then kidnapped their daughter was shot to death by officers Tuesday morning after a nine-hour standoff, authorities said.

Gilberto Alicea, 30, stabbed his estranged wife, Toni, about 3:30 a.m. at her home in Muscoy, San Bernardino County, officials said. He then fled with the 3-year-old girl to his mother’s home in Mead Valley, where he had also been living.

“After nine hours of negotiating with the suspect and him not cooperating, at some point we had to make a tactical decision to enter the residence,” said Lt. Shelley Kennedy-Smith, a Riverside County sheriff’s spokeswoman. “We did have a 3-year-old life that we were concerned about.”

The girl was physically unharmed, officials said. They said more details would be released at a news conference today.

Last year, Alicea was found guilty in Riverside County Superior Court of inflicting corporal injury on a spouse. He was placed on probation for 36 months and ordered to take anger management classes.
