Dwight Dumais, a junior at Ventura Buena, led from the start and won the Southern Section Division I boys’ diving championship, becoming the third member of his family to win two titles, Tuesday at Mission Viejo Aquatics Center.

Dumais, who also won the Division I title as a freshman in 2002 and was the runner-up as a sophomore last season, scored a meet-high 602.25 points to beat Laguna Hills junior Brian Lawler, who was second with 528.65 points.

Long Beach Wilson senior Javier Rivas placed third, and Mission Viejo freshmen Steven Starks and Patrick DeBoi were fourth and fifth.

Rick Nathanson should consider moonlighting as an oddsmaker now that he’s stepping down as varsity coach at Calabasas.

He was right on track when he predicted the order of finish in the eight-team Marmonte League this season, picking Moorpark to win the title ahead of Thousand Oaks and Simi Valley.

With the final league games scheduled for today, Moorpark and Thousand Oaks are tied for first with league records of 9-4, followed by Simi Valley at 8-5. All have secured automatic playoff berths, and none plays either of the others today.

Nathanson, who plans to coach a lower-level Coyote team next season, is 216-106-1 in 13 years at the school. Nathanson and one of his assistants, Don Moriarty, have sons who will be freshmen at Calabasas in the fall.

“We’ll have both our sons and a bunch of other kids we’ve seen over the years,” Nathanson said. “We’ll see how that goes this summer and how our sons can handle it.”

Two-time Cy Young Award winner Bret Saberhagen will take over the varsity team.

Villa Park senior catcher Casen Burwell drove in four runs, and Mark Trumbo retired the final two Anaheim Canyon batters with the bases loaded to give the Spartans a 7-6 victory and the Century League title.

Villa Park, ranked No. 2 in the Southland by The Times, had hoped to limit Trumbo’s duties against the No. 5 Comanches (18-7, 10-4 in league). The USC-bound right-hander injured his right ankle two weeks ago and started his second straight game as the designated hitter.

But after Canyon sophomore Grant Green cut the lead to one with a two-run single in the seventh, Coach Scott Luke called on Trumbo.

After walking Lance Aponte on four pitches to load the bases, Trumbo got Jeff Branson to foul out to first and then struck out Mark Imanuel to end the game.

The Spartans (23-2, 13-1) rallied from a 4-2 deficit with two out in the fifth inning. Kyle Cruikshank’s single to left drove in Mitch Bialosky when the throw skipped through the legs of Canyon’s catcher.

Matt Morris drove in four runs for Canyon with a three-run homer and a double.

Taryne Mowatt (18-3) gave up three hits for Santiago (22-3, 12-2).

Lucas Lee shot three-under-par 69 to earn a medal for Torrance, but senior Jason D’Amore from Manhattan Beach Mira Costa and Jonathon Lo from San Marino each shot 70 to lead their teams to first- and second-place finishes in the Southern Section’s Western Divisional at Mountain Meadows Golf Course in Pomona.

Mira Costa (366), ranked No. 4 by The Times, and San Marino (368) qualified for the section’s team championships Thursday at La Cumbre Country Club in Santa Barbara.

Santa Barbara San Marcos, the three-time defending section champion and winner of the Central Coast Divisional, will be the favorite at the finals, where the top four finishers advance to the CIF/SCGA tournament June 3 at the SCGA Members Club in Temecula.

Robert Budke, an assistant track and field coach and physical education teacher at Arroyo Grande who was arrested in February on suspicion of child molestation and unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, is scheduled to appear in San Luis Obispo County Superior Court on May 28 when his arraignment is continued.

Budke, 35, has been charged with one felony count of sexual intercourse with a minor, oral copulation with a minor, a lewd act upon a child and dissuading a witness from reporting a crime.

He faces a maximum of 12 years in state prison if convicted on all counts.

Budke was arrested after the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Department received a report alleging that an Arroyo Grande track coach had been molesting a former student-athlete for approximately three years.

The alleged victim, whom reports have identified as a 19-year-old female now living outside of San Luis Obispo County, was 15 years old when the molestation reportedly began.
