Highly regarded freshman Sean Singletary decided to go to Virginia to play in the Atlantic Coast Conference. He arrived at a school picked to finish eighth in the conference and not make an impact.

Two games into his college career, the former Philadelphia high school star is already working to change that. He had 15 points and made several big plays Sunday night, and the Cavaliers upset No. 10 Arizona, 78-60, at Charlottesville, Va.

“We just have something to prove,” the 6-foot point guard said. “I know a lot of people are overlooking us. They picked us to be in the bottom of the ACC.... We’re in the beginning of the season, so it’s nothing to be all hyped up about.”

The Cavaliers (2-0) looked like the more highly regarded team against the Wildcats (2-1), who left after the game for New York, where they have a Preseason NIT semifinal game against Michigan on Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden.

“We had a lot of energy, and they didn’t,” said Singletary, who was six for 11 from the field, had eight assists, six steals and five rebounds.

Virginia led, 34-22, at halftime and used several short runs to keep the Wildcats from getting closer than nine in the second half.

“You have nightmare games like this, and we’ve got one nightmare out of the way, I guess,” Wildcat Coach Lute Olson said.

No. 6 Illinois 91, Florida A&M; 60 -- Dee Brown scored 20 points, all in the first half, to help the Illini (2-0) take a 58-29 halftime lead at Champaign, Ill. The Rattlers ended their two-game trip to the Big Ten 0-2, losing to Michigan State and Illinois by a combined 63 points.

No. 12 Mississippi State 98, Nicholls State 69 -- Lawrence Roberts had the first triple-double in school history. Playing with a mask protecting his broken nose, Roberts had 18 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds for the Bulldogs (4-1), who secured the win in their home opener with a 20-7 run early in the second half.

Roberts, the Southeastern Conference player of the year last season, didn’t make a basket in the first half but scored 13 points in the second half to help Mississippi State pull away.

No. 18 Alabama 85, North Texas 71 -- Chuck Davis scored 25 points to lead the Crimson Tide (2-0) at Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Tide shot 73% in the first half, and led by as many as 22 before halftime.

Davis made eight of 10 from the field and nine of 11 from the free-throw line, and had seven rebounds and three blocked shots for the Tide, which will play in the Great Alaska Shootout on Wednesday.

No. 25 Gonzaga 78, Montana 62 -- The Grizzlies, playing their first game under Coach Larry Krystowiak, lost their eighth in a row to the Bulldogs. Sean Mallon scored 21 points, Ronny Turiaf had 20 and Adam Morrison 19 to lead the Bulldogs (2-0) at Spokane, Wash.
