California receiver Chase Lyman will miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left knee.

Lyman, a senior, had 14 catches for 414 yards and five touchdowns for the Golden Bears. He was hurt Saturday during their 23-17 loss to USC and had surgery on Monday, a team spokesman said.

Lyman is expected to be replaced in the starting lineup by Jonathan Makonnen, the Bears’ leading receiver in 2002 before a broken foot kept him out for most of 2003.

Makonnen, who has been slowed because of a strained hamstring, slipped on the Coliseum grass on Cal’s final offensive play against USC, failing to catch Aaron Rodgers’ pass into the end zone for a potential winning score.

Arizona reserve quarterback Nic Costa has quit the team, Coach Mike Stoops said. No reason was given for Costa’s departure.

Costa, a junior, was in on only a handful of plays this season. He played on the punt block team Saturday against UCLA.

The Wildcats also are dealing with the shooting of freshman Sheldon Watts early Sunday. The offensive lineman, who was being redshirted, was shot in an arm and the chest while at a party and remained in critical condition.

Oklahoma cornerback Antonio Perkins will miss three to four weeks because of a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee, leaving the second-ranked Sooners without one of the best punt returners in the country. Perkins holds the NCAA record for punt return touchdowns in a game with three last season against UCLA.
