Share

The ninth annual Budweiser Oval Nationals, one of sprint car racing’s most prestigious events, open a three-night U.S. Auto Club sanctioned championship tonight at Perris Auto Speedway.

National points leader Jay Drake, who has moved from Via Verde to Brownsburg, Ind., to further his racing career, will face a challenge from 64 entries, including former Oval Nationals winners Cory Kruseman of Ventura and Bud Kaeding of Campbell, Calif. Drake and Kruseman are teammates in cars owned by NASCAR driver Tony Stewart.

Seven of the top 10 USAC drivers will be facing USAC/CRA regulars such as Rip Williams, Damion Gardner and Mike Kirby, who make Perris’ half-mile clay oval their home base.
