Frankel Also Wins the Morvich

If winning the Breeders’ Cup Classic with Ghostzapper wasn’t enough, trainer Bobby Frankel received an added bonus later in the day at Santa Anita.

Leroidesanimaux, making his first start since winning Hollywood Park’s Inglewood Handicap on May 1, rallied to beat pacesetter and 2-1 shot De Valmont and four others in the $100,000 Morvich Handicap.

In winning his fourth in a row for Gonzalo Torrealba’s T N T Stud, the 4-year-old Candy Stripes colt who has lost only once since coming from his native Brazil ran about 6 1/2 furlongs on turf in 1:11.76. The 3-1 third choice was ridden by Jon Court.

De Valmont, who was beaten by 1 1/4 lengths, finished a nose in front of 17-10 favorite Cayoke, then came Geronimo, Irgunette and Vasywait. Coded Message was scratched earlier in the day.

“Frankel is a superb horseman and I’m grateful to have the opportunity to win on this horse again,” said Court, who rode Leroidesanimaux for the first time in the Inglewood. “He’d been freshened up and they did an excellent job getting him ready.”

Midway Road, the 3-2 second choice, edged 6-5 favorite Total Impact by a nose to win the $150,000 Fayette Stakes on closing day at Keeneland.

A 4-year-old son of Jade Hunter owned by William Farish and trained by Neil Howard, Midway Road, who is now unbeaten in four starts at Keeneland, completed the 1 1/8 miles in 1:50.39.

He was ridden by Calvin Borel.

Host, a 4-1 shot, won the $150,000 Knickerbocker at Aqueduct, beating Evening Attire by 1 1/2 lengths. Chris DeCarlo rode the winner for owners Eugene and Laura Melnyk and trainer Todd Lletcher and completed the 1 1/8 miles on turf in 1:49 4/5 .

A race earlier, Bending Strings, a 2-1 shot, easily beat Smokey Glacken and four others in the $150,000 First Flight. In giving trainer Kiaran McLaughlin his second consecutive win in the First Flight, Bending Strings won by 5 3/4 lengths and completed the seven furlongs under jockey Shaun Bridgmohan in 1:22.
