On the highly touted “Kevin Hill,” which he describes as a mix of “Sex and the City” and “L.A. Law,” Jon Seda appears as a playboy lawyer forced to accept that his best friend and running buddy recently inherited an infant girl, putting a crimp in their partying ways.

Seda’s background -- he was born in New York City to Puerto Rican parents -- has allowed him to be cast in a variety of roles. “I’ve been fortunate,” he says, “that I never got stuck being typecast in a certain way. I’ve played everything from a Navajo guy to a Mexican to a Puerto Rican to an Italian to just straight white. Now I’m playing a successful lawyer, so it’s not like your typical show where there’s a Latin guy but he’s the drug dealer.”

Because “Kevin Hill” shoots in Toronto, Seda says he has time to make the 6 1/2 -hour drive home to Pennsylvania to be with his wife and three children. As if on cue, his infant daughter gurgles into the phone. The irony is not lost on the 33-year-old actor.

“In real life right now,” he says, “I’m such the opposite of the character I’m playing on the show. I’m a father. I have my children here. I don’t go out to clubs or anything. I did once, but not anymore. As a family, we’ve gotten so spoiled by my schedule as an actor and the time it allows me to be at home. One day away feels like forever.”

A onetime amateur boxer, Seda still often relates to situations through sports metaphors and notes dryly: “I had somebody ask me once, ‘You must be so much happier being an actor now rather than a boxer -- you don’t get hit as much.’ I said, ‘Well, at least in boxing I could see the punches coming.’ ”
